Description: The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is a workshop given once a week for six weeks for people with different chronic health problems. Classes are highly participative. Mutual support and success build participant confidence in their own ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives. Subjects covered will include: dealing with frustration, fatigue, and pain, exercising for improving strength, flexibility and endurance, appropriate use of medications, how to communicate effectively with healthcare professionals, nutrition, and how to evaluate treatments. Sponsored by the Centralina Area Agency on Aging, classes are FREE and will be held at the South Iredell Senior Center starting Thursday, May 7 – June 11, 2009. Classes will be every Thursday for six weeks from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Participants will receive training materials and refreshments will be provided. Space is limited so please sign up early. Description: The Iredell Council on Aging/South Iredell Senior Center continues to participate in the Project Fan/Heat Relief program administered through the NC Division of Aging. Funds to purchase fans for older adult’s age 60 and better were contributed to the Division of Aging by the Duke Energy Foundation. Requirements: MUST be 60 years of age or older, MUST be a resident in Iredell County, have a home situation where HEAT is a threat to the person’s health and well being (for example, does NOT have air conditioning.) Limit one fan per person/family. If you meet these requirements and are in need of a fan, please call or come by the South Iredell Senior Center (704) 662-3337 to apply or for more information.

Description: *Stroke Survivor Support Group meets the 1st Thursday of each month from 1-3 p.m. The group reaches out to individuals in the community and supports them in coming to terms with how their life has changed and issues they face in every day life.
*Diabetes Support Group meets on the 4th Monday at 12 noon.
*Dementia Support Group meets on the 2nd Wednesday at 2 p.m. and is designed for caregivers of individuals with dementia. Daycare provided upon prior request and arrangement. These support groups are open to the community. This group is supported by the Western Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
*Prostate Cancer Support Group meets the last Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m., everyone -male, female, friends, family, etc. are welcome to attend. Refreshment provided by Summit Plc. and pizza provided quarterly by Vocelli Pizza.
*Parkinson Support Group meets the 3rd Tuesday at 2 p.m. lead by Lake Norman Inspirations. Please call the Senior Center prior to attending to check for cancelations and closings.

Description: SISC water aerobics, back, arthritis workouts, and water walking exercise classes are taught by certified instructors through Iredell County YMCA. Classes are approximately one hour long and open to all seniors age 60 or better with priority given to Iredell County residents. Information on guidelines and fees are available upon request. It is recommended that new participants observe their class of choice before registering. Private lessons are available for the disabled, visually or physically impaired.

Description: After June 12 all television stations went digital. This means that people still using an analog TV without a converter box are not able to receive television stations that have converted to digital. Information is available at the following websites (www.dtv.gov www.dtv2009.gov, www.dtvanswers.com, If you need a converter box, coupon applications are available at South Iredell Senior Center. The deadline for applying and receiving coupons has been extended until July 31, 2009. The South Iredell Senior Center provides the following assistance for senior adults in switching to digital:
- Individualized assessment to determine if you need a converter box
- Availability of on-line computers
- Coupon applications and assistance in completing the application
- Transportation available for seniors who do not drive, so that they can get their converter box
(Call 704-663-5112 to arrange transportation, a two-day notice is required)
- Volunteers available to install your converter box
For additional information and to apply for a converter box coupon you may also go to www.DTV2009.gov and choose option #2 or, call the coupon program anytime at 1-888-388-2009. Deaf or hard of hearing individuals should call 1-877-530-2634 (English/TTY) or 1-866-495-1161 (Spanish/TTY). TTY Service is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. Eastern Time. You can also call 1-800-508-5777 if you need assistance with trouble shooting. If you obtained a coupon earlier and now realize that you do not need a converter box, please return the coupon to the Council on Aging or the Senior Center so it can be given to others in need.

Description: Recommended by the Arthritis Foundation (AF), it’s good for the body, mind, and spirit. Tai Chi may help some individuals to improve high blood pressure, balance, muscle tone, circulation, flexibility, aching backs and joints. It has even helped some to lose weight. Mike Gentile, a certified physical trainer and AF instructor, and Reiki master teaches a Tai Chi class on Mondays from 11 a.m. – noon, as well as a beginner’s Tai Chi class from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Cost is $36 per person for a six week session.
