Welcome to Denver NC

Welcome to Denver, North Carolina

denver nc waterfront

Denver, North Carolina is located in Lincoln County on Highway 16 on the west shore of Lake Norman on the Catawba River.  It is about 25 miles north of uptown Charlotte, North Carolina, the largest city in the state.  Denver has a population of approximately 13,000.

The Denver area was settled in 1770 and because of its location adjacent to a swampy area was originally known as “Dry Pond”.  In 1873, “Dry Pond” was renamed “Denver” after a local school principal, D. Matt Thompson.  The people of “Dry Pond” were trying to persuade the railroad industry to route through the area, but the people worried that the name “Dry Pond” made the area sound unattractive.  The school principal was asked to choose a new name that would make the area more appealing.  Colorado was becoming a state and booming at that time so Mr. Thompson suggested renaming the area Denver.  In 1877, the town of Denver was officially incorporated in the state of North Carolina. However, in 1971 the little town of Denver lost it's incorporated status when the State of North Carolina rescinded the charters of several inactive N.C. cities.

The west side of Lake Norman, where Denver is located, has typically been a relaxed and laid-back area.  With easy access to Charlotte and Hickory via Highway 16, development has quickly hastened to bring homes and businesses in the area over the last several years and still today development projects are underway.  It is becoming one of the fastest growing areas on Lake Norman.
