Cornelius is a small town located along 54 miles of shoreline on Lake Norman. Founded in 1893, originally called “Liverpool”, the name was changed to Cornelius to honor Joseph Benjamin Cornelius, the man who supplied money to open the towns cotton mill.
This small town packs a punch with a variety of activities available for everyone. You can golf, jet ski, hike, take in a play or concert and have a fabulous meal all in the same day if you are up to it!
For boating and jet skiing Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius and Blythe Landing Park in Huntersville are the go-to public launch ramps. Queens Landing in Mooresville offers sightseeing cruises and dinner cruises on Lake Norman for a relaxing time. There are also several boat clubs available to join to join and boat rentals for Lake Norman to go out and enjoy a day on the Lake.
If you are a golfer, you are in the right place. Cornelius is conveniently located in a golfer’s paradise. There is the Peninsula Club, Birkdale Golf Club in Huntersville, River Run Golf Club in Davidson, Cowans Ford and Verdict Ridge Golf Club in Denver and Trump National Golf Club in Mooresville, just to name a few. And if you are not that serious about your golf game or just young at heart, Lake Norman Mini Golf is a great way to spend a carefree afternoon. Cornelius is a very pet-friendly city with a great off-leash dog park located at Ramsey Creek Park. There are also a multitude of other parks that have great trails to exercise your dogs.
For family fun, there are so many options and outings. Take a short drive to Patterson Farms and go strawberry picking or enroll the kids in the Patterson’s “Farmer for a Day” program in the summer. Visit Carrigan Farms in the fall and go apple picking, grab a pumpkin and take a hayride day or night. In October Carrigan Farms becomes “Scarrigan Farms” which they say becomes the scariest haunted trail in the region. Load up the car and take the family on a drive through Lazy 5 Ranch. See more than 750 exotic animals roaming the grounds as you drive around safari style. On your way out, stop and check out the petting zoo.
Love to shop? Southpark Mall in Charlotte, well known for its upscale stores such as Tiffany’s, St. Johns, Neiman Marcus and many more is a short 25 minutes from Cornelius. And even closer is Northlake Mall off Highway 77 with a wide variety of shopping to choose from.
Our neighboring town Davidson has a wonderful Farmers Market on Saturday’s from 8-12 with local vendors. And if you are looking for something on a larger scale there is the grander Charlotte Regional Farmers Market open every day but Monday.
If you are wanting some adult time close to home, 20 miles north in Troutman is the Daveste Vineyards. Go enjoy the wine tasting and pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on this beautiful property.
The biggest bonus with Cornelius is its close proximity to Charlotte International Airport. It is less than 25 miles away and makes it so easy to pick up visitors or to hop on a plane yourself. Concord Regional Airport which is also close has recently begun operation and is offering immitted flights to certain areas.
