Davidson is a small town on Lake Norman in northern Mecklenburg County of North Carolina.  In 2016 the estimated population was 12,452.  The town was founded in 1837 when the Presbyterian Davidson College was established.  Davidson College was named for Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, a local Revolutionary War hero.  Davidson’s growth in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries typified small railroad towns throughout the Piedmont, however with the presence of the college it created a unique village with a tree-shaded campus filled with inspired architecture. The school’s influence extended beyond campus to commerce and culture throughout the entire town.

Today, the tremendous development around Charlotte has stimulated Davidson’s growth.  Local downtown businesses, now with specialty shops, and restaurants and the prestigious nationally known Davidson College has made the town an intellectual and cultural center, drawing a sizable professional class.  Additionally, the town received National Register Historic District status in 2009 for the historic core of the town, which includes downtown.
