Spring has sprung, and with warmer weather comes the return of those pesky black ants. If you’re like most people, you probably don’t want ants crawling around your home.

How to Get Rid of Those Pesky Black Ants

There are more than 12,000 species of ants in the world, and about 25 of those species are found in the United States. The most common type of ant found in homes is the Argentine ant. These small, reddish-brown insects are only about one-tenth of an inch long, but they can multiply quickly and become a major nuisance. Argentine ants are also known to contaminate food and transmit diseases.

  1. Start with a clean house. Ants are attracted to food and water, so the first step in keeping them out is to make sure your house is clean. Wipe down counters, sweep and mop floors, and empty waste baskets regularly. Also, be sure to seal up any food that could attract ants, like sugar, flour, and cereal.
  2. Use ant baits. Ant baits are a great way to get rid of ants because they allow you to kill the whole colony. Simply place the bait near where you’ve seen ants and they’ll take it back to their nest where it will kill them all. Be sure to use baits that are specifically designed for ants and not roaches or other pests.
  3. Make a DIY ant spray. If you’d rather not use chemicals in your home, you can make your own ant spray with ingredients like vinegar and essential oils. This spray will repel ants and also kill any that come into contact with it. Simply mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle, then add 10-15 drops of an essential oil like peppermint or lemon. Spray this mixture around suspected ant entry points like windowsills and doors.
  4. Bring in some natural predators. If you have an ant problem that just won’t go away, you may need to bring in some natural predators to help get rid of them. Things like ladybugs, green lacewings, and praying mantises will all eat ants, so release them near areas where you’ve seen the most activity.
  5. Call an exterminator. If all else fails and you just can’t seem to get rid of the ants, then you may need to call an exterminator who can provide more targeted treatments specifically for your problem areas. Exterminators will also be able to identify entry points that you may have missed and seal them up so the ants can’t get back in again.

Those pesky black ants can be a real nuisance, but there are a number of ways to get rid of them for good! By following these simple steps, your home will be ant-free in no time.
